You see, I loved him – I mean, I loved him when he didn't love me anymore, day in and day out, watching him get further and further away from me. I could see the hate in his eyes when he looked at me... I went mad! - He mustn't go away!... Anything to stop him! – That's all I wanted to do!... meet Ethel Saxon... It's midnight, and we travel back to 1934 for one of the last of the Pre-Code pictures. It's an early outing for Humphrey Bogart, and a rare glimpse of its diminutive and forgotten star, Sidney Fox, whose career and life were all too short: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Fox I improved its sound, vision, and transcript, complete with translations, additional languages available on request💬 Enjoy the picture...🕰 🌟 Kiss? » No. » Mad at me? » You know I am. » Well, kiss me anyway. 🌟 Midnight is a 1934 American Pre-Code drama film, the first directed by Chester Erskine, and starring Sidney Fox, O.P. Heggie, Henry Hull and Margaret Wycherly. It was based on the Theatre Guild play of the same name (New York, 29 Dec 1930 - Feb 1931, closing date unknown, 48 performances) by Claire Eunice (née Ginsburg) and Paul Field Sifton. The film was produced for Universal and shot on a modest budget of $50,000 at the old Biograph Studios in the Bronx, 807 East 175th Street, New York City. Stars: Sidney Fox, O.P. Heggie, Henry Hull, Margaret Wycherly, Lynne Overman, Humphrey Bogart Director, Writer, and Producer: Chester Erskine Screenplay: Based on Midnight, a 1930 play by Paul & Claire Sifton Insights: Production An independent production release through RKO Radio Pictures was under consideration before the deal with Universal Pictures. Humphrey Bogart had a supporting though key role, it was his tenth feature-length film and one of the last Pre-Code films, having been released just four months before the strict enforcement of the Hays Code on July 1st, 1934. The film was re-released theatrically as 'Call It Murder' by Screen Guild Productions (Guaranteed Pictures Corporation) in 1949 (1947), after Bogart became a big star. He was given top billing, although he only appears in a few scenes, and was credited eighth in the original release. It was most frequently shown in tandem with 'Racketeers', the retitled re-release of The People's Enemy 1935. Notes Whilst revising the subtitles, I discovered this old expression "four-flusher" 1:06:40, which dates back to the Old West: "Anyone who plays poker knows five cards in a single suit is called a flush. What happens if you have only four of that suit? A whole lot of nothing, which gives us the word four-flusher, a person bluffing at cards, or someone who seems promising, but isn't." Used to describe a conman, trickster, or faker - it rolls off the tongue, and might still come in handy... https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/four-flusher The announcer on the radio at 0:33:30 is recording artist Billy Murray. In modern times, the funds withdrawn from the bank most likely would be considered joint funds, and Ethel would be entitled to the funds. However, in 1934, when this movie was made, Ethel was viewed as stealing the funds withdrawn by the husband. The implication of theft sealed her fate. The $3,800 Gar Boni paid for his car in 1934 would be equal to $85,442 in 2023. Taglnes One woman was to die at midnight!...another woman was to kill at the same hour...why?
