description:
The show's closed down, so chorus girl Jennie Carr finds herself stranded in New York City on New Year’s Eve, 1938 — she's starving, but not looking for any trouble... She looks like a nice kid, but she's certainly gonna have a rough passage... Fittingly, this charming British crime thriller mystery sets sail on New Year's Eve - with its sharp script, it delivers a surprisingly entertaining Hitchcockian adventure - taking us on a transatlantic flight from London to New York aboard the Atlantic Airlines "Lisbon Clipper", a giant transatlantic flying boat. Somewhat neglected, it is brought to us courtesy of ITV, with subtitles by Luís Filipe Bernardes. I made revisions and improvements to its (VHS) audio, video, and subtitles, and added some translations, for your viewing pleasure!... "We'll have a chat later... Yes, make it much later"... enjoy your journey... Also known as Lisbon Clipper Mystery and New York Express, it was directed by Robert Stevenson, who had a long career in which he initially directed and wrote a diverse range of successful British films. When David O. Selznick invited him to Hollywood, he was loaned to Walt Disney, for whom he directed nineteen live-action films, including the timeless Mary Poppins in 1964 ☂ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwDX-_T-UvT8o_tMPGmoacrCuojsfzImQ Stars: John Loder, Anna Lee, Francis L. Sullivan, Frank Cellier, Desmond Tester, Athene Seyler Director: Robert Stevenson Based on the novel by Ken Attiwill "Sky Steward", screenplay by Roland Pertwee & J.O.C. Orton, with additional dialogue by E.V.H. Emmett & Curt Siodmak (uncredited). Insights: Production It was largely filmed at Gaumont Graphic/Gainsborough Studios, Shepherd's Bush, London, England. The production relied on a prop of the flying boat titled the"Lisbon Clipper", which was realistically created in life-size and used for both exterior and interior shots. Recognising the talent of "the specialists at make believe", the film employed the skills of the studio workmen to also build a realistic, scaled-down version used in back-screen process work. Reception Kinematograph Weekly reported the film as a "surprise turn-up" at the British box office in March 1938. The New York Times review called it a "well-staged and moderately entertaining Class B melodrama" featuring "a transatlantic airplane as richly imaginative as a front-cover of Popular Science or a Buck Rogers space ship". A more recent review by Leonard Maltin noted the film was a "... Fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek Hitchcock-like yarn ...". More recently, The Silver Scream review summed it up with: "There’s quite a mixed bag of passengers in the second part of the film. It makes for a lot of light banter back and forth between all the characters. The movie has often been referred to as Hitchcockian, most likely because of the dry humour that is filtered through the film, punctuated by moments of tension. For the most part, it is a fun and fast-paced film. Anna Lee was married to director Robert Stevenson during the filming of the movie. She also played Lila Quartermaine on ABC’s daytime soap opera General Hospital." Notes At 30:00 there is a reference to pounds and guineas. It may be helpful to note what "five guineas" meant in 1937; five pounds plus five shillings - each guinea being one pound plus one shilling, and each shilling being five pence. Thus, the negotiations in that scene in the film concluded with: "Five pounds, and five bob for the missus." - a "bob" being the nickname for a shilling. A witty comment in context, although the concept of referring to your wife as "the missus" is rather outdated nowadays! In retrospect, deciphering pre-decimal currency remains confusing, even in the UK.
