  • description: It's Christmas Eve, 1949, San Francisco...where from crime to compassion, everyone does the best they can, the best way they can...even at Christmas...meet Joe Miracle... An unusual and quite unexpected Christmas Noir, which I had never seen until now. Featuring Glenn Ford and Evelyn Keyes in their final film together, and directed by Gordon Douglas and Henry Levin, it's a winding, innovative story with a sharp script, and quite a treat! Curiously, it was released on August 1st, 1949, despite its Christmas narrative... I improved its visual quality and revised and translated its subtitles, for your holiday viewing pleasure 🎄 I'll leave Jenny Jones and Joe Miracle to guide you through their Christmas story... with a name like Joe Miracle, it makes sense to wear a Santa suit...enjoy... Fall-Winter Holiday Season - Films Playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwDX-_T-UvT9Sw9nsyivwecF1o65EagNX Stars: Glenn Ford, Evelyn Keyes, John Ireland, Beulah Bondi, Percy Kilbride, Clara Blandick, Ted de Corsia, Stanley Clements, Roman Bohnen Directors: Gordon Douglas & Henry Levin Screenplay by Orin Jannings, story by Milton Holmes Insights: Notes This was the sixth and final film to feature Glenn Ford and Evelyn Keyes after The Lady in Question (1940), The Adventures of Martin Eden (1942), Flight Lieutenant (1942), The Desperadoes (1943), and The Mating of Millie (1948). This was Roman Bohnen's (who played Barney Teener) final film. He succumbed to a heart attack on February 24th, 1949, five months before the film's release. The $100,000 Joe steals from his own club (now run by the mob) would be worth about $1.3 million in 2023. In the opening sequence, Joe Miracle (Glenn Ford) smashes his sedan through a barricade and reaches the far end of the drawbridge just before it begins to rise. A squadron of police cars and motorcycle cops then chases him through the streets of San Francisco. It was all shot on location, predating the San Francisco car chases in The Lineup (1958) by nine years and Bullitt (1968) by 19 years. When the couple visits the tenement apartment to check on the baby, the language being spoken by the old man and Joe is the latter's native Polish. The Polish word for diaper is pielucha. The car Joe is driving at the beginning is a 1946 Lincoln four-door sedan. Filming Locations in San Francisco, USA The Third Street Bridge - the bridge Joe barely makes it across during the chase at the beginning of the film. The Lefty O'Doul Bridge (originally the Third Street Bridge and China Basin Bridge) is a bascule bridge connecting the China Basin and Mission Bay neighborhoods of San Francisco, carrying Third Street across the Mission Creek Channel. It is located directly adjacent to Oracle Park. Varennes Street and Union Street - police chasing Joe near the beginning make a right turn onto Union Street here. 699 2nd Street - Joe passes the Electric Steel Foundry and U.S. Pipe and Mfg. Co. during the chase. 438 Union Street - where Moe heads with the small trash can to pick up his ticket out of the country. Quotes Joe Miracle: What's that smell? Jenny Jones: Poverty. Jenny Jones: You're no good. Joe Miracle: How would you know that? Everybody does the best they can, the best way they can. You think I was born with a 45 in my hand? What gives you the right to sit in judgment? Joe Miracle: When somebody gives, take. When somebody takes, scream. That's an old Bulgarian proverb. Jenny Jones: What's the point of all this? Joe Miracle: Fun. You ever hear of it? Taglines IN HEADLONG FLIGHT HE PAUSED...TO LIVE A LIFETIME in 36 thrill-packed hours...with this woman! (original poster) The Most Talked About Guy in Town!
